Khai Liew design website

Project: Khai Liew website
Client: Khai Liew

Frost first met furniture designer Khai Liew through our collaboration with Object Gallery on the Freestyle exhibition (new Australian design for living) in which Khai was exhibiting. Our brief was to create a website that is ‘visually arresting but timeless, sharp but with warmth’ - all things that could be said about Khai Liew’s work. Khai’s background is an interesting one, having spent over 20 years as a specialist valuer, conservator, and growing up in Hong Kong and Malaysia before moving to Adelaide. These influences are reflected in his work, which often combines the beautifully simple with the intricate. The layered, ‘concertina’ design of the website reflects the ‘layers’ of influence and inspiration behind each piece and the navigational structure effortlessly guides the user through the site.

James Cant website

Project: Website design
Client: James Cant

Returning to his home in Australia from London where he was a highly respected beauty and fashion editor, James Cant was unknown to publishers and agencies in Sydney. Frost Design created the identity using a play on his surname ‘Cant’. A simple cross through the ‘t’, elevated the idea of his skill and the retention of his name. ‘Cant’ became ‘Can’. Frost Design also designed a mailer to the scale of broadsheet newspaper using bulky newsprint stock and a website in order to showcase the depth of his experience.

Project: Tyro website
Client: MoneySwitch Ltd

The Australian EFTPOS business is full of hidden fees and unnecessary operating limitations for merchants. The first entrant into this business for over 10 years, Tyro’s philosophy is based on giving merchants a better deal by taking on the big banks and winning. Indeed, the name 'Tyro' means a novice who rises up to become a champion. The logo design crafts the letters out of a continuous line, where it feels like the letters 't' and 'y' are almost shaking hands to represent how Tyro reaches out to its customers. This was also a suggestion of how data travels in an uninterrupted path from point to point.

The logo, website, and all stationary are reproduced in four different colours as example of how Tyro challenges the accepted norms. When creating the website this meant four times the work; four stylesheets and four versions of each image. To make this idea work all the photos were colourised and the logo was incorporated on a large scale as an abstract visual relief. Each day the text and images change colour while the background of the website remains neutral grey. Frost also built a Content Management System so the client can keep the content up to date.

Customweave Website

Project: Customweave website
Client: Customweave

Frost Design was approached by Customweave to develop a website to showcase their wide range of hand-made carpets and rugs. Working in close collaboration with the client the website was designed as a series of distinct modules, each created as short animations that reveal a little about the company’s philosophy, design process and manufacture. The showcase sections of the site, places examples of the their carpets and rugs into a virtual environment to give customers and impression of what the product will look like in their homes. Inspirational imagery fills the background of the site, further immersing the viewer in the interactive experience.

AGDA Eyesaw Exhibition

The Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) approached Frost Design to put together a booklet showcasing the inaugural Eye Saw exhibition. Eye Saw is an exhibition event which ran as part of Sydney Design 06. The project invited some 25 leading graphic designers from Sydney to design a piece of visual communication that enabled the public to understand, enjoy and discuss graphic design and its contribution to the economy and its cultural role in a social context.

Frost Design created four posters for the exhibition, borrowing the graphics found in Opthomalogist's charts. The charts which are normally used to diagnose complaints ranging from astigmatism to colour blindness, were given a new meaning by the insertion of the words 'Eye Saw'.

This theme was carried-through into the design of the booklet. It employed 'french-folded' pages which were printed on the reverse side with the exhibition entries. This required the reader to tear open the pages along perforated edges to reveal the work, encouraging further exploration. The booking was hand-sewn to reinforce its handcrafted quality.

Frost Design would like to thank Edwards Dunlop for the supply of the paper, Canon for kindly printing the booklet and Petaras Press for binding it.

POL Oxygen Stretch Magazine

POL Oxygen approached Frost Design to do a special edition of the magazine with Vince Frost as guest Creative Director. In the initial briefing, it was discussed that it would be all about people who move effortlessly between creative fields. Creatives like Catherine Martin, Gotan Project, Marc Quinn, Floria Sigismondi, Graft, Jun Takahashi, 2X4, Viggo Mortensen, Kenny Schachter and John Pawson. We came up with the notion of Stretch and set about stretching the boundaries of magazine design. The magazine itself is stretched. At 550mm, Stretch is double the height of a standard POL Oxygen magazine, with a horizontal split down the middle so it folds to fit on a library shelf. The split changes the way the reader interacts with the magazine, breaking conventional ways of reading. The bronzed skeleton sculpture by Marc Quinn used on the front cover, again reinforced the stretch theme. It unfolds to reveal a midget - a stretch on reality that is only revealed once you open the cover.

Freestyle website

Project: Freestyle website
Client: Object Gallery / Melbourne Museum

Freestyle is a ground-breaking exhibition of contemporary Australian design for living. Our idea for the exhibition was based on using a blue transparent perspex square as a framing device for the artist and their work (while also acting as a reference to the sponsor'™s brand). Each of the 40 designers were photographed in their own environments interacting with the blue frame in their own way. The square form was carried through to the Freestyle identity, which uses a modular geometric type, and using the squares as the structural grid for the book, website and other collateral.

Frost Bite Exhibition

Object Gallery approached us to create their first exhibition on graphic design. As graphic design surrounds us, the aim was to create a dynamic exhibition that was accessible and not precious. You could either interact with multimedia on a 3D asterisk or flick through one of the books or magazines whilst sitting on one of the huge foam letters. Instead of being hung like paintings in a gallery, digital prints rested against walls. Held at the Sydney Opera House, the space had no windows, so we took the opportunity to darken the space further. The floor was covered in monochrome images of letterpress type and the walls were signwritten with large-scale letters on black. On entering the space you were met with a huge asterisk printed with examples of work, also holding books, magazines and LCD screens, showing different scales of work. This then projected further onto the back wall.

The Last Magazine

Rizzoli International Publications

Based on the premise that magazines as we know them are dying, The Last Magazine is a look at the future of magazines and the emergence of the 'style press' - magazines that are physically and aesthetically engaging, vibrant chroniclers of trends. With the client in New York and the book designed out of Sydney, much of the challenge was getting vast quantities of content into a coherent 288-page book and forming a close collaboration with the author despite the distances. We designed a new font that symbolises the 'shredding' of magazines and their traditions. The pull quotes are like magazines that are falling out of line - once again building on the book's themes.

Freestyle Exhibition

Object Gallery/Melbourne Museum

Freestyle features Australia's best design for living by 40 outstanding designers. Jointly presented by Object Gallery and the Melbourne Museum, the exhibition needed to travel both in Australian and overseas, so a main consideration was ensuring the exhibition could flat-pack for transport and be reconfigured for each venue. Starting with the square grid that we created for the overall identity, we developed a landscape of white blocks for displaying objects, and clear acrylic for where they needed protection. The designers are featured in super-scaled portraits, giving them equal weight to their work. The square grid was used to cut through the portrait panels, creating a window through to the objects and linking the designer and their work. Each designer?s display is a discrete series of freestanding 3D elements, so they can be rearranged for each venue. The open sides of the displays create a series of interesting juxtapositions, which also change from venue to venue.
